Almost… almost…!
But if you’re anything like me, that little teaser is nowhere near enough cute for one day! So I thought I’d link a Kawaii TV segment featuring 6% Doki Doki shopgirl Vani-chan (who we posted about here)!
Click here to watch the Kawaii TV segment “Kawaii Success Stories” at TokyoKawaiiEtc.com!
It shows some clips of Vani’s audition to become a 6% Doki Doki shopgirl in 2008, back when she was still known by her first name Yukari and beat 200 hopefuls to secure this unique job. It also compares her sweet image then with her dramatic look now! I love her daring haircuts. (But even though she looks tough, she’s just as adorable as always! I’ve been lucky enough to meet her a few times and she’s a total doll!) Kawaii TV also shows how Vani and Yuka practice dance routines for two hours after work, with store creator Sebastian Masda, so they can put on shows for their international tours. Who knew being cute could be so damn tough?
Anyway, most of the show features the suuuuuper famous Gyaru model, make-up artist and fashion designer Matsuoka Rie, otherwise know as Okarie! (Sounds like Oh-karee-eh.)
The Kawaii TV hosts investigate how she became such a celebrity in Japan… and it turns out it was her mobile phone blogging! She uses her phone camera to take step-by-step pictures of her make-up looks, creating tutorials that easily explain how to recreate her adorable dolly eyes. Her mobile blog is so popular that it has had over 1 billion hits, and you can check it out here! (Maybe it would be fun to access this on your mobile phone to get the full experience… haha!)

The video goes on to show that her blog is so powerful, that a hair salon she recommended now receives 30 new customers every month, and a type of flase eyelash she blogged about immediately sold 200,000 sets! The editor of Popteen magazine even says that Okarie’s celebrity and word-of-mouth promotion has helped the reputation of their magazine more than standard advertising ever could.

Now Okarie is running her own fashion label Ank Rouge, and girls will queue for miles in Shibuya 109 just to meet her at her openings. My favourite part of the video is when the hosts meet Okarie’s parents, who have carefully saved all of the magazines she has ever appeared in — but Okarie’s parents can hardly tell her apart from the other models because she wears so much make-up, haha. Cute! Towards the end she gives a make-over to Okarina-chan, who finds it difficult to create dolly eyes with her small, upward angled eyes.
I want to do some more posts about Gal culture, but I thought Okarie-chan was a good start. What do you think of her Gal style and amazing rise to fame? And would you guys be interested in seeing us re-create her (and other model’s) make-up looks with video tutorials?
DelilaH recently put on a fashion show for their Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Hit up the comments section and let us know which looks are your favourite!
